I just cut back my hours as a speech-language pathologist. It was a tough call to make, but a necessary one. Working 40+ hours a week at work in combination with running the photography business on the weekends, putting in up to 25 additional hours a week (more if we photographed a wedding that weekend), was really taking a toll on my health, both mental and physical. I won’t go into the nitty-gritty with all of that but to sum it up, I just wasn’t myself and hadn’t been for too long. My amazing boss and clinical director at work were incredibly understanding and worked with me so that I could cut back to 3/4 time. This change has enabled me to be a better speech-language pathologist, a better photographer, and a healthier individual, which is what I wanted all along 🙂
I say all of this, too, to say that while juggling a part-time job with a full-time job I had to put a large part of me to the side – my love of creating things. In order to get the photography business where it is today, Scott and I devoted most of our free time to growing the business, and I am so glad that we did because we would not be where we are today without that dedicated time. We learned so much in that growing process about starting a successful business and about us as a couple, and I can honestly say that we loved (almost) every minute! We could not be happier about where The Freckled Key Photography has taken us and are thrilled about what is to come!
And so, with The Freckled Key Photography where it needs to be and with a few less hours at my week job, I am SO happy to say that I have found the time to start creating again! As I sit at home, I find myself dreaming up earring designs and cupcake recipes and opening up my scrap paper drawer and sketching in my journal – it is quite literally like a part of my brain that had to shut off for a while has decided to come out of hiding, and I was ecstatic to welcome it back!!
Friends, thank you for your support and encouragement through this period in our lives. We would not be where we are without you. Stay tuned for a little project I have started – a sub-category of The Freckled Key that I call “The Impatient Crafter”. More to come….!
Paper, glue, and glitter,
